Mr. Brunel, the celebrated engineer, narrowly escaped death several times. But the most extraordinary accident that befell him was that when he was playing with his children one day and amazed them by bringing a half sovereign through his mouth to his ear. Unfortunately, he swallowed the coin and it ended up in his windpipe.

The accident occurred on April 3, 1843, and was followed by frequent coughing and occasional discomfort on the right side of the chest; but the disturbance of breathing was so slight that for some time it was doubted whether the coin had really entered the windpipe.
